"Kito de Pavant (Groupe Bel) who was lying fifth in the IMOCA Open 60 class officially abandoned the Route du Rhum-La Banque Postale very early this Saturday morning after suffering a failure to a steel keel ram.
De Pavant has employed the back-up system which fixes the keel to a central position and was reported to be heading immediately to the Azores and then onwards to his home base of Port Camargue where his technical team will be waiting to start a race to repair the boat on time for the 31st December start of the Barcelona World Race."
"Said Kito de Pavant: “I heard a sound like an explosion, looked round the deck and could see nothing but immediately the boat feel over. I could see that the head of the keel was no longer held. On our boats with the canting keel system, we have a hinge axis at the bottom of the boat, and one above which is pushed by a steel lever arm.
